Voting Rights? Nun for You!

This was in my email today:

______________________________________________________________

Republicans can't win elections based on their failed philosophies, so, they've latched onto a new plan: make it as hard and expensive as possible for people to exercise their constitutionally protected right to vote.

Since the Supreme Court decided two weeks ago to uphold a draconian law in Indiana that requires citizens show a government issued photo ID to vote, Republican legislatures across the country have started moving fast to pass their own version of this horrible law.

And just like the poll taxes and literacy tests of the past, Republicans hide their real purpose under the banner of preventing possible voter fraud. But these laws are really about stopping senior citizen, low income, and newly registered Americans from voting. Why? Because they typically vote for Democrats.

We must stand together and protect every American's right to vote.

SIGN THE PETITION NOW

Already 19 states are rushing to pass anti-voting laws. And just this week, Missouri Republicans started taking it a step further. A photo ID isn't good enough; they want you to show your birth certificate or passport in the polling booth too.

What's next? Require a blood sample? Maybe a lock of hair? Or some of your DNA?

Republicans claim this is about national security. They have no proof, but illegal immigrants might be trying to vote. On the other hand, just last week in Indiana's primary, as many as 12 nuns were denied their right to vote because they didn't have government issued photo-ids. That’s right; evidently Republican's are protecting our democracy from our biggest threat: nuns without ids.

Together, we have the power to stop this assault on our right to vote.

TAKE ACTION AND SIGN THE PETITION NOW

This is just the beginning. We will deliver the petition to elected Democrats in legislatures around the country. Armed with the support of the nation behind them, they'll have the power to stand up to this Republican backdoor power grab.

Together, we are building a coalition to beat anti-voter laws in Missouri and beyond. And in the days ahead, we'll demand Governors in every state make their position public. Will they side with the American people and protect our sacred right to vote or will they help George Bush and Republicans lead an assault on our democracy?

With your help, we will defend American freedom and protect the right to vote. Thank you for everything you do.

But you have a passport.. you've been to Europe.

I was wondering about this law because here it is not obligatory for the voting offices to ask for ID but they can do so if they see a reason, like when a person is voting for someone else who can not come to the office themselves. also in the big cities I think showing an ID is the usual thing. I remember being surprised the first time I voted after moving to a little village that I was not asked for my passprt. But in America not everyone has a passport, especially the minorities and elderly people who might vote Democrats. It is a tiny bit suspicious that the Republicans have chosen this point in time to change to law to the effect of obliging voters to ID themselves.

I do have a passport, but I think the majority of people wouldn't and wouldn't have their birth certificates either.

I'm trying to remember if I had to show any ID at the last presidential election??

Most people would have drivers licenses... but not everyone.

Actually I must admit .. owning a passport or at least a photo-ID card is obligatory here. It must be that we have borders all around and people are coming in and going out without hardly being checked at all, it would become chaos if the authorities were not able to check ID's of the people once they are inside the country because it doesn't happen all the time when they cross the borders.

It's just the timing of this law in the US now, so close before your presidential elections... it seems very clear what the Republicans are trying to achieve!

No not just the Bushes.. govenments in general. Our goverment has such a law, which polling places are free to use if they see necessary. Apparently Indiana thought it necessary to use it because a lot of deceased persons or persons who registered to vote in Indiana do not longer live there and will not be using their right to vote, and other people could impersonate a deceased or otherwise disappeared ex-neighbour by using a voters pass they found in the mail. It seems that their organisation is a bit chaotic if they can not track if people should still be registered to vote there, but okay...

On the other hand the ID cards in Indiana are free. Ours here are not. I had to pay 48 Euros for my passport and an ID card is 41 Euros. Is it time that we protest against our own government for inhibiting our rights here?
