the fastest guy with no legs

Posted on 2008-May-31 at 06:57

He doesn't like to be called "the fastest guy with no legs", he'd rather be called "the fastest guy period".

Oscar Pistorius, a South African athlete with two artificial legs below the knee is trying to get himself qualified for the Olympics. Not the Paralympics, but the regular Olympics. The commission tried to get him disqualified claiming the bounce in his artificial running prothesis gives him a mechanical advantage, but the way it looks now, he will be allowed to participate if he can place himself.

It was on the news. To see him run was amazing and he was way ahead of his competition. A Dutch athlete who has one similar running prothesis demonstrated for the camera that the bounce in the artificial foot is strong but that her other, normal leg could match it nicely, disproving the claim that it could be an "advantage".

Here is an older ABC video:

I've just seen it on TV. It's amazing he sure is fast and has a right to participate in the games with all the other guys. Good post!

That's kinda tricky.... I respect his desire to compete, but I wonder where the line is drawn when you start allowing cyborgs to compete?

ManinJapan.. there's nothing mechanic about the blades. I think it must be harder to keep ones balance on them than on regular legs, after all everything has to come from the thigh muscles. I don't think normal athletes will be standing in line to have their legs cut off and replaced with cyberblades. And they might be disappointed. The stamina this guy has shown, i bet he would be a top athlete on healthy legs as well. He's rowing withe the blades that he has got. No-one has the right to envy him or in my opinion to deny him the right to compete.

Yeah I don't really know enough about this guy's specific situation to comment, I just mean in general. This guys might be OK, but like I said, once you start allowing mechanical parts, and as technology advances, it will be tricky to find a place to draw a line where the mechanical bits go from being a disadvantage to a benefit.
